It’s a checklist you don’t want. Saggy skin? Check. Loose jowls? Check. Turkey waddle? Check. If these are just a few of the problems looking back at you in the mirror, chances are a facelift is what you need. It may sound drastic, but times have changed.
Twenty years ago, the surgeon who did the tightest facelift was considered the best. In recent years, the facelift has enjoyed a makeover of its own. Significant advances have helped me achieve far more natural-looking facelift results for my patients from Lafayette and Walnut Creek while minimizing scarring and downtime. I see patients of all ages—even 40-somethings—who’ve experienced the limitations of nonsurgical tools that no longer transform the lower face and neck in a meaningful way.
What is the best procedure to make your face look younger?
A facelift is performed to reshape the face, remove excess skin, and offer the patient a more youthful appearance. A blepharoplasty surgery, also known as eyelid surgery, can enhance your visual fields as well as create a rested appearance by removing the excess tissue from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Our neck and upper chest will often reveal our chronological age, if not treated at the same time as our face. Therefore, a neck lift and chest resurfacing can be performed on its own or in combination with a facelift.
How long does facial rejuvenation last?
The duration of improvement varies somewhat from individual to individual. Once the excess skin is removed and the sagging tissue is repositioned, the aging process still continues. The surgical changes that have been created will slowly age and change, but the improvements will last 8 to 15 years, depending upon the patient’s skin tone, general health, previous and continued sun exposure, and smoking, including past and current use.
Seeing our own patients up to 15 years after surgery has demonstrated that we are getting excellent, long-term correction. You should realize, however, that you will look much better at any given age than you would have without the operation. So, in a sense, the changes are permanent.
What is the most effective non-surgical face lift?
For those of us not quite ready for a major surgical makeover, a refreshed appearance may be achieved through non-surgical aesthetic products and services. I recommend the many procedures which can combine to create a “liquid facelift.” In any procedure I do, I use my background as an artist to personally perform these procedures, which also require little downtime.
Are facelifts worth it?
Trust me … you simply would not believe how many men and women around you have had facial rejuvenation surgery. When facial rejuvenation is done correctly, no one will ever know you had any “work done.” But from personal experience and from feedback patients have given me, you may notice a difference in how you are treated after the procedure.
In fact, a new study backs up what I’ve known for decades—more often than not, people who have facial rejuvenation procedure, including the face, eyelid, and eyebrow lifts, are often perceived as more successful and healthy, not just merely beautiful. The study, published in JAMA suggests cosmetic surgery “conveys an even larger societal benefit than merely restoring a youthful appearance to the face,” according to the researchers.
My Personal Story
I have experienced it firsthand. At 25 years old, I was hit by a semi-truck whose driver had a seizure from drinking and not taking his seizure medication. Just days later, I recall going to my doctor’s office with my twin sister. Although she is my fraternal twin, she was always a mirror of sorts for me. We had always attracted a great deal of attention as a set of bubbly, bright red-haired firecrackers. After the accident, I had no choice but to acknowledge that my sister looked less like a twin to me, and instead at that time, was more of a reminder of how I used to look. For me, it was tangible proof that my appearance changed, and that physical beauty mattered greatly. For the first time, I saw how differently people reacted to my sister compared to how people treated me.
In total, I underwent 18 surgeries, bone grafts, implants, titanium plates, and screws. The surgeries slowly allowed me to get my face and life back. It also gave me a unique position to truly understand how cosmetic surgery can transform your life. When I see you, I will be honest about what will make the most significant and excellent improvement in your face over time, with the least risk, and within your budget. I will make sure you are within your comfort zone, doing what I do best, which is to perform surgery and procedures.
